LEADERS IN DESIGN & BUILD

It first became popular in the 1950s and 1960s as designs from the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway began to be recognised by other countries further afield, especially the UK. Scandinavian furniture design has simple lines. It’s minimalist and unfussy which creates an atmosphere of light and space no matter what sized rooms you have in your home.

De-Clutter
If you want to give your home Scandinavian style the first thing you must do is get rid of the clutter. There’s no room in a Scandinavian home for piles of newspapers or bits and pieces lying on the sofa. De-cluttering can be overwhelming, but if you get it done, your home will feel cleaner and more spacious immediately. Get hold of some large bin bags and go from room to room. Throw any anything that you don’t really love or that you never use. You can give away or sell items on sites like Gumtree or Pre-loved to someone else who will use and appreciate them.

Decorate
Once your home has been de-cluttered you can give it a lick of paint. An affordable option is to use white which will create the feeling of freshness and space that the Scandinavians love. You can add colour later with textiles.

Carpets
Scandinavian homes usually have wooden floors. Take up your carpet and if you’re lucky there might be a wooden floor underneath which you can renovate. If not, there are plenty of different wood and wood-look floor ranges to suit most budgets. A wooden floor is easy to maintain and simple to clean. It’s also ideal if someone I the house suffers from allergies because it cuts down dust and dirt.

Light
During the day you want your home to let the light in, so get rid of any heavy curtains and replace them with blinds. In the evenings you want a cosy atmosphere. You can create this by installing dimmer switches to your rooms and with a few well-placed lamps, which will help to brighten dark corners or highlight pictures, photographs or posters on your walls.

Furniture
Now it’s time to add the furniture. If you don’t want to buy new have a look around second-hand shops in your area or online. Tired looking furniture can be re-varnished, painted or reupholstered to give it a new lease of life. Don’t worry about furniture that matches. You can create a stylish room with mismatched furniture. Different designs and materials give a room character.

Colour
Finish off your Scandinavian look by adding colour with rugs or cushions. Bring the outdoors in with green plants and fresh or dried flowers. And there you have it. A beautifully designed Scandinavian look home that looks spacious feels fresh and is easy to clean.
